In Memoriam: Arnie Kahn, Ph.D.

ASBMR just recently learned of the passing last summer of ASBMR member and leader Arnold “Arnie” Kahn, Ph.D. Dr. Kahn was a prominent member of the Society, serving as a Councilor between 1986-1989 and Secretary-Treasurer between 1991-1997. For his significant contributions to the bone and musculoskeletal field, Dr. Kahn received the prestigious ASBMR Shirley Hohl Service Award, in 2000. Prior to his passing, Dr. Kahn served as Professor Emeritus at University of California at San Francisco.

 
Dr. Kahn published more than 200 papers, abstracts, and book chapters on a wide range of topics, and mentored dozens of fellows and students. His most recent research interests were on aging and longevity, serving as a member of the Longevity Consortium at California Pacific Medical Center, Visiting Scientist at the Buck Institute for Age Research and serving on the editorial board of the Journal of Gerontology.

Arnie was a terrific mentor to me, as well as a good friend. He made my transition to St. Louis easy, having my children and me stay with him and his wife, lending me a car, helping me move into an apartment. We even took aerobics classes together. He was a major help in the writing of my first NIH and NASA grants (which were successful).  He was always a great writer. After he moved to San Francisco, he and his wife, Jane, were incredibly hospitable to me, having me to stay numerous times, since my daughter was at UC Berkeley. We had many enjoyable meals and times together. He gave me helpful advice when I was deciding whether to move to NYU College of Dentistry. I was very glad to see him at the last Denver meeting of the ASBMR in 2017. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Nicky Partridge
