In Memoriam: Lorraine Fitzpatrick, MD

Recommended Posts

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Lorraine “Lorie” Anne Fitzpatrick, MD on Wednesday, February 22 at her home in Wayne, Pennsylvania, USA. Dr. Fitzpatrick was the first woman full physician at the Mayo Clinic in 1989 with a focus on the bone microarchitecture research laboratory. She continued her 35-year physician career as Director at GlaxoSmithKline in 2006 and most recently served as a Chief Medical Officer of Radius Health, Inc from July 2015 until her retirement in 2019. During her career and following retirement, Dr. Fitzpatrick still remained an active volunteer in the bone health industry and was a current member of the ASBMR Advocacy Committee.

I am shocked and sad to hear of Lorie’s passing. A dear friend with whom I shared many adventures and discussions. A gentle person with a sharp mind and caring heart, the field has lost a wonderful advocate and colleague and I a very dear friend.

A very sad day indeed to learn of Lori's passing. My time at the Mayo Clinic as a research fellow overlapped with Lori's appointment there as their first full female physician and, together with Bart Clarke, we did bone biopsies in healthy men to examine bone histomorphometry. We remained connected through our shared interest in bone at ASBMR and IOF meetings.
She was a lively, intelligent and insightful person, who cared for research fellows and endocrine trainees. She will be missed by all of us in the bone field that were lucky enough to know her. I pass on my deepest condolences to her husband, Richard Fehring and her family.
